Everything in position 1 is a shape, and shapes move. Slide the whole E minor scale shape up three frets and every note goes up three semitones: E becomes G, and the scale is now G minor.
There's a catch, and it's the key to the next stage: the open strings were doing work. Three frets up, your first finger has to press where the open strings used to ring. That finger lying across the strings is a barre.

Try this
Play E minor up and down in position 1, then the same fingering from the 3rd fret. Same shape, new key: that's how every movable chord and scale works.
